Jim Bolger’s Statement May 28, 2008

In order to properly advance the policies and propose the solutions necessary to address the world’s current struggle to balance the growing need for food, fuel, fiber and water, the World Agricultural Forum (WAF) will hold two meetings in 2009 to encompass our initiative with Africa. Just as we have done for the past 10 years, a biennial World Congress will be held in St Louis in May 2009, to be followed by our first meeting in Africa scheduled for September 2009.

The theme of the World Congress will be Creating Wealth by Investing in Agriculture: Opportunities in Africa.

The 2009 World Congress will also integrate the WAF Task Force on Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education in Africa---Entrepreneurship and Community Development. With more attention focused on Africa’s potential in agriculture, the WAF will assemble educational leaders from around the globe who have demonstrated positive results in preparing small farmers on how to address both the business and hands-on aspects of agriculture in today’s world.

Higher education leaders such as Jose Zaglul of EARTH University in Costa Rica, who have successfully trained hundreds of farmers in Central and South America, will participate along with other well-known educators. The goal is to encourage the tertiary education system in Africa to produce entrepreneurial and community oriented graduates who are committed to assisting and promoting the critical role agriculture plays in creating wealth at the individual, local and national level.

Our Board’s decision to continue with the 2009 World Congress in St Louis, Missouri, USA is a prudent preliminary step in organizing the key influencers and decision makers from Africa who will be instrumental in developing the agenda for the African program. The outcome of the 2009 World Congress will be a Call-to-Action, which will be the core driver of the 2009 African program.

The Rt. Hon. James B. Bolger, ONZ
Chairman, Advisory Board
Former Prime Minister, New Zealand
