2010 World Agricultural Forum - Latin America

The Role of Latin America in Feeding the World in 2050
May 12 - 14, 2010

Brasilia, Brazil

Sponsored by

The event will focus on the question of whether Latin America, an agriculturally privileged region, will be able to sustainably increase production in the current era of heightened environmental awareness and increased demand. Participants will discuss several topics emanating from the region's combined needs to increase agricultural production in an environmentally responsible manner; would investments in infrastructure and production be well-received in the region? Can the world continue to rely on Latin America as a source of raw material in the food, fiber, and fuel debate? How would certain political designs affect overall flow?

It will serve as a precursor to the topics and issues to be discussed at the World Agricultural Forum's World Congress in Ningbo, China on July 1-2, 2010. The outcome of the Forum will be a call-to-Action for Latin America for investment and moves to policy change based on a shared understanding of objectives and responsibilities.

Agriculture, Rural Development and Urbanization: Reaching the Right Balance
July 1 - 2, 2010

Ningbo, China

In response to new global priorities, the World Agricultural Forum will convene a Special World Congress in Ningbo, China on July 1-2, 2010. The theme of the Special Congress is "Agriculture, Rural Development and Urbanization: Reaching the Right Balance". As Chinese incomes continue to rise, domestic consumption and market opportunity are dramatically increasing. China has implemented numerous reforms to transform their rural economies and strengthen their agriculture and agri-food sectors. The Special World Congress will convene leaders from around the world to showcase best practices and economic growth of the agri-based sectors.

With the full support of the China Center for Urban Development, the National Development and Reform Commission and the City of Ningbo, the Special World Congress will bring together approximately 200-250 global leaders from industry, government civil society and leading experts from across China. The Congress will not only showcase impacts from policy reforms, but will focus interactive discussions around innovations in technology; food safety; supply chains; and financing structures to enable transformation.

2010 World Agricultural Forum - East Africa

October 6 - 8, 2010
Kampala, Uganda

Many experts agree that Africa's competitive advantage lies in its abundant natural resources and its potential in agriculture. Historically, private sector extractive industries and governments of countries where those resources occur have been heavily criticized. Transport routes (roads and railways) were constructed mainly for the benefit of exporting raw materials from the interior to seaports. Today, insufficient infrastructure is a major constraint to economic development, particularly south of the Sahara, and particularly how it applies to agriculture.

The East Africa Forum will focus on engaging the private sector with key policy makers and various development, NGO, and foundation initiatives to build on the investment potential along transport corridors for a greater impact on the ground in Africa. A framework is urgently required in which investments in agriculture are directed equally to all components of the value chain, with particular support for adding value among rural communities.
